If anyone asked me what I see myself as? I would say I'm a student of music. I started my education at home. My dad had/has an extensive collection of music and would play everything from Fela, Rex Lawson, Michael Jackson, Little Richard to the Beatles. He loved the Elvis Priestley films and during the holidays we would get a good dosage of Elvis songs and dance moves. At secondary school we used to circulate tapes. Basically if you were lucky enough, one of your older brothers or sisters bought a CD of an artist and we would secretly record it and pass it on to our mates. Sometimes you would end up with a recording of a recording and the ‘hiss’ was so bad that even the ‘Dolby’ switch on your auto reverse Memorex Walkman could not remedy. For me it was my sister, so I was educated well on 90s Rnb (Jodeci, SWV, BBD, Wreckx n Effect) and every now and again when I saw my older brother he would give me a tape with rap, ragga or electronic music on it (Shabba Ranks, MC Hammer, Salt N Pepper, Rakim and Bobby Brown). We basically copied the dance and fashion from music videos and the cult movie 'House Party'. When I got my first job I saved all my wages to buy a stereo system and started to buy CDs as the sounds sounded nicer without the now annoying 'hiss' and there was no need to keep pressing the rewind button. It was so funny to watch the cycle start all over as I noticed my CDs going missing from their cases over a period of time.

During sixth form college we got the student union radio up and running after it had been absolute for a number of years. I starting hanging out with people with different tastes and started listening to bands like Nirvana, Limp Biscuit, Pavement and Black Sabbath. During my university years I would spend hours in my halls playing Hip Hop especially from the early 2000s. I was a big fan of artists like Nas, JayZ, DMX, Common, Blackstar and basically would watch VHS video re runs of Yo! MTV raps and Lyracist Lounge. I then starting to really get into Hip Hop and that's when I truly began to understand where it started from and learn of the likes of Kool Herc, Afrika Bamabaataa, Grand Master Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore. I was excited by the culture that surrounded the art form. This was when I really started to appreciate the early to mid nineties movement and how much it had paved the way for the music I loved. It was so creative to me - you had artists sampling records and making beats, making beats from scratch and being expressive in different ways.

You had people like Rakim and KRS-1 who were intelligent and could rhyme anything, then you had ATCQ who had beats that were closely coming with a jazz flavour and there was De La Soul who was clever with word play, Gangstarr - where GURU would lace beats put together by Dj Premier, beats that were so banging by the end of the track your neck would ache, The Phacyde who had a comedic element almost, Slum Village propped up by Jay Dilla’s skill with an MPC and you have Wu Tang, where RZA created a ninja story to go with his amazing usage of sampling soul records and not to forget Scarface, Outkast and the rest of 'The South' pioneers. The list of artists that made an impact is endless.

If I ask my parents what their earliest memory of me was my mum would reply, ’dancing around our house in your nappies’. Nowadays I listen to music from any and everywhere and I love sounds that move internally or spiritually. I’m really honoured to have this opportunity to share what I believe is my interpretation of good music to the world and to be able to share this platform with some of my current heroes is truly overwhelming.

Yes - I know I have not posted for ages and know I will remember something later then it will be too late..ha

Danny Yankee - I know that sounds like a funny one but there's nothing funny about being surrounded by hot Latinos doing the rumba.

M.I.A - This was a high octane show and the lights were a little bit crazy at times but the electronic sound effects and camp dancers were entertaining (especially the one in the gold trousers) and this was extra special as I saw this with y little sis.

Erykah Badu - Another great show EB was late on but was worth the wait.

The Black Keys - Great gig, all I can remember is thinking...hmmmm strange crowd.

Rick Ross - Amazing set line up and dude remembered all he's lines (trust me this is no longer the norm in hip hop). During BMF money was released from the ceiling, I caught a tenner and bought a couple of red stripes for my mate joe and I. Cheers Rossy

Living in the big LDN can be a little overwhelming sometimes, so much to do, so much to see. However every now and again you stumble across a little gem and I have found that of Brixton Village , . Its a brilliant find within a find. I used to be a strictly north London human who never crossed the river if I could help it. Nowadays I try to venture to the unknown as much as possible. I was right the South or 'THE SAULF' does have a completely different vibe and energy. Its refreshing to say the least from Shoreditch that has become a stomping ground for hen nights, yuckyness and people who think its the place to be - to be COOL. That in its self is a total turn off. YES you do need to have your wits about you and be more aware of your surroundings when it gets dark, but shouldn't you do that anywhere you are? I just love walking through the market and smelling all the spices of the world in a pretty indoor arcade that looks like a blast from the past, but modern at the same time. I enjoy eating at Ballantelli's a vegetarian Italian restaurant or at Brixton Cornercopia a organic food store where you can buy home made jam and rye bread or feast on a delicious homely menu thrown together by their Chef and shop owner. I'm ensured that all ingredients are fresh and sourced locally and when he has time he pops the menu on their TWITTER page...yummy. I haven't even spoke about the famous pizza lounge, the Moroccan or the lovely fresh coffee hut. Let me not spoil the thrill too much for you guys who may want to find your own little treasures but my favourite is this little vintage store called STRONG LOOK, its ran by Chevon and her business partners. SL throw mini shop parties, exhibitions and champion talented illustrators.
Its early days but I think its the beginning of a beautiful relationship.....BRIXTON VILLAGE I HEART U.

Well what can I say...Badu got my back up. I rushed my chicken dinner and even though I knew she was never going to be on time. This is show business I understand that you have to prepare...burn some incense, burn candles, drink some Patrone, sing to the spirits and prance around naked. But surely wih all this you would expect Ms Badu to turn up half an hour late, but no a whooping hour and 15 mins! Even the crowd booing did not help to shift her. Then out of the blue the band rush out and play her intro '20 Feet Tall' and even they get booed. After an agonising wait, out Erykah comes with a top hat, blonde wig and cape...I was pretty impressed by her set especially with her drum machine skills and she kept it mainly recent with New Amerykah (part 1+2) songs 'You Loving Me' , 'The Healer' and she threw in some of her classics like 'Next Lifetime' and 'On & On'. I forgave Erykah as she saved my fav 'Window Seat' till last, that kept me buzzing on our journey home.

Shout out to Paloma Faith who looked fab and her shoes matched my bandana!

I few weeks back I was in this party dancing around and generally having a good time. This guy comes up to me and says something like - "Hey man, don't get weird or anything but you seem like a cool dude,". I have to say I was a little freaked out, but then I thought isn't that what everyone else would do, why not just go along with it. so I thanked him turned around and forgot it happened and then like half an hour later he comes back up to me and asks to buy me a drink, he was with a group of guys and girls. Again I thought, whatever its just a drink so I drink. I go back to the dance floor and there he is again telling me, "Its so hard to meet straight up people like you," he had this gazing look which was a little weird but again I just do me. We get to talking and we find out we are both going to see this band and he asks for my number and I thought why not - he's not asking for my National Insurance Number or anything??!!! Anyhow I gave him my number and the night of the gig he txted to see if I was going. I could not make it and he understood.

Now I was standing in a group of people just chatting and chilling and there was this guy, he was around the same height as me and had this authentic surfer style thing going on, with he's short shorts, wavy hair, nose ring and tie dye vest. I thought to myself, I dig this guy's vibe. At one point we nodded each other and before he left he asked if he had gone over my foot with his bike, I said no with that gazing look. Thinking back at what happened to me - I was like am I having a BROMANCE right now. Hahaha...I didn't tell him I thought he was super cool like because I'm a shy dude deep down, but the thought did cross my mind.

So I was down at that trade show called, 'The Reset III' (hope you all went down and bought something you can't find in Topman!) All was well, hanging out with some friends, making new ones and just chilaxing in the sun. Before I left my house,I thought to myself, 'Its just too nice a day to leave my puppy 'Baloo' in doors all day!' So it makes sense to take him. For some genetic reason I don't know, some one thought it was a good idea (God, mother nature, etc) to have dogs covered in this think skin stuff called fur, which in the summer is a nightmare. So there we are sat in the sun, people coming up to me to take my picture, let me correct that statement - people coming up to me to take BALOO's picture and to keep him cool my friend Hampus gets me some water from the kitchen and I top up with ice from the drinks cooler bucket. Cut a long story short I lift Baloo up and place him on my lap and I get into deep conversation with the guys and forget I have him on my lap. I feel something wet forming and my brain says, 'Don't be stupid, your imagining it' so I ignore brain and jump up - but you guessed it, it was too late. Baloo had relieved himself on my lap! Great. Can I take this opportunity to thank Rufus (Second Son) for giving me a pair of jeans to wear home and for trading the jeans for a photo (High Definition) that he has posted on my facebook, how does that song go.....'that's what friends are for '.

Cut The Chat

My barber Damon 'of D&L's fame' talked me into doing some modelling for 'some art thing!' Little did I know he meant I was to have my hair cut in front of a whole bunch of people. Now I trust my barber but I did not know that he was about to use my head as a canvas and as his response to the work of Chris Ofili at the Tate Britain. I was really nervous and it showed when interviewed and asked about hair cuts I babbled on about being a customer for 15 years rather than 10!!! When you have a camera in your face and lots of people starring at you things come out a little wrong. I got a chance to look at Chris Ofili's exhibition there's some provocative imagery, engaging and thought provoking pieces and I could not help but ask myself 'What can I take from this piece' and 'What is Chris trying to convey?' I was getting all arty and that made me smile because I'm so not arty at all. I also got a chance to catch Eddie Kadie do some of his award winning stand up comedy. Damon then held his talk show 'Cut the Chat' where Ashley Walters gave insight to how ethnic minorities are treated in the film business. So all in all it was a nice Sunday really, my advice to you is to get down to the Tate Britain and catch the exhibition while you can. To my knowledge there are some events next Sunday too.

End of an era

As we embark on this journey called life, one cannot help but to take a moment to look back, as it brings the warm feeling of nostalgia. Yes, the so called 'noughties' have come to an end and what a decade it was or was not. I don't really feel like great milestones have been made in the last decade in terms of lifestyle, culture, politics even. We are still not an efficient low carbon emissions country, people still have not find the right work/play balance and with a few exceptions the majority of us are still running ourselves into the ground in our careers, the core 9-5, 40 hour week. I was not alive to witness the swinging 60s or disco inferno of the 70s, they sure looked like fun! This last decade will be remembered for what??? Sex In the City, X factor, the digital Revolution (blogs, social networking i.e Facebook, Apple products (ipods), the first black president (Obama), to name a few. Apart from what Obama and his team have achieved, not that inspiring really, no wonder we seem to look back for ideas of spunking up our everyday lives i.e. Music, Fashion, Food, Technology. Yes, you hear correct; technology the price of vinyl is on the up and people are making mix tapes not playlists and recording them on analogue tapes!
All I can say is I hope for our sake the next 10 years has more vigour, excitement and change that I can tell the grand children one day.

Firstly, happy new year all. I hope you all had a cracking new year. Its time to get going, the strategy this time around is to be more specific. What are we going to do? When are we going to do it and how?

These are the questions I shall be asking myself and hoping that I can learn as much as I can on this journey.

This blog will continue and there are plans for a new menswear page. There are some new writers coming up to share their thoughts with you and as for the rest your gonna have to wait and see.

Why? I was sent Fading by my mate Jeff years ago, that one tune and this album have been a constant fixture ever sinse.

Why? I was put on to this CD by Elijah. street soilder, you represent the struggle, big up Cain (M.O.M). Tubby T Rest In Peace.

5. The Sagas of Klashnekoff (2004) - Ricohet Klashnekoff
Why? Street lingo and colloquialism used to capture the audience's imagination. Punchlines and tunes to match, which was a rarity. Speaking the truth from the ground up. 1 love K-lash.

I'm not sorry for leaving out the other powerful Artists out there. I'm HUMAN and therefore I'm motivated by my emotion not LOGIC.

Why? Are you being serious right now, if you have not heard this banger....wow, in fact right now if I was you I would hang my head in shame.

2. The Preface (2008) - Elzhi
Why? Being a straight up lyricist doesn't count for much in the states anymore, it does here though. Elzhi shines on Black Milk beats like no other.

3. Only Built for Cuban Linx Pt II (2009) - Raekwon
Why? I had part one on rotation a few weeks back, a classic album. This highly anticipated record is the reason why I still check for new releases, we have been waiting for this record for almost a decade and man has it been worth it. This LP is a hip hop throw back and embodies the original Wu Tang Kung Fu slash soul sample style filled with the jaw dropping word play of the Chef, Tony Starks amongst other Wu members.

4. Veni Vidi Vicious (2000) - The Hives
Wny? 5 dudes dressed in sharp suits thrashing around guitars with some serious attitude. simples.
